Saying Goodbye to RadioShack

It’s a safe bet to say no matter what part of the country you’re in, you have heard about the recent collapse of RadioShack. What was once a Fort Worth based nationally recognized retail icon is now closing doors, one by one. It’s sad to me to see a business like this hanging on by it’s fingernails for years and then finally letting go. It’s also sad to me because this is the business that brought my husband and I back to the town we love. He took a fantastic job with RadioShack’s Real Estate team seven years ago and we were so excited as this was a promotion and a great new location for us…Fort Worth!

It seems obvious that RadioShack succumbed to the changing dynamics of retail and more specifically technology. Unfortunately for them (but fortunately for us) we are able to do more and more on our smart phone and we therefore rely less on stores such as “The Shack”. Think about it, we use our phones to take notes, take pictures, get directions, watch a movie, surf social media, our phone can even be our credit card! The list goes on and on. So when “The Shack” got away with focusing on five or six products, we were able to actually roll all of those into one tiny phone. Hallelujah!

I think all of the technological advancements are brilliant. It does make me wonder, however, where will it go from here? What will the next decade bring? Maybe a phone can be invented that is truly indestructible. I mean a phone my kid can dunk in a full glass of water at the dinner table (as he did on Saturday), a phone that can be run over by a truck! That would be amazing. Only time will tell where technology will take us which is ironic given the recent push to make smart watches that can communicate with your phone.
